If you’re experiencing a sharp, burning or shooting pain that travels from your lower back down your leg, there’s a good chance it’s sciatica. It’s a common condition but that doesn’t make it any easier to live with especially when the pain lingers or keeps returning. If you’ve tried rest, medication, exercises or even other therapies with little improvement, you might be wondering if osteopathy could be the missing piece.
At Somerset Osteopathic Clinic, we specialise in helping patients find lasting relief particularly in cases where nothing else has worked.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. It typically causes pain, tingling or numbness that can radiate from the lower back into the hips, buttocks and down one or both legs. It may also lead to weakness or difficulty moving the leg or foot.
Sciatica can be caused by a number of underlying issues, including:
A herniated or slipped disc
Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
Piriformis syndrome
Postural imbalances
Muscle tightness or inflammation
Pregnancy
Unfortunately for many patients, the cause isn’t always clear-cut especially in cases of unresolved or continued sciatic pain.
Common Treatments for Sciatica (and their limitations)
Standard treatment often includes:
- Painkillers or anti inflammatory medication
- Physiotherapy
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Steroid injections
- In severe cases, surgery
These options can be helpful, particularly in the short term but they don’t always get to the root of the problem. Many of the patients we see have tried some or all of these methods without lasting relief and this is where we can help.
The Osteopathic Approach to Sciatica
Osteopathy offers a different way of looking at sciatica. Rather than focussing solely on where the pain is felt, we look at the whole body; how it moves, where tension is held and how all the systems are working together.
At Somerset Osteopathic Clinic, Ed’s approach involves uncovering the deeper reasons behind why the pain started and why it’s persisting. Sometimes, the sciatic nerve is irritated due to physical imbalances in the body but sometimes, it’s emotional stress or trauma that’s being ‘held’ in the body and showing up as physical pain.
How Can Ed Help?
Treatment is calm and gentle, without any forceful manipulations or cracking. Through a combination of cranial, functional and structural techniques, Ed works with the body to release tension and create the right conditions for healing.
Patients with sciatica often notice improvement after just one or two sessions, with many reporting significantly reduced pain, improved sleep and mobility and a greater sense of calm.
The goal isn’t just pain relief, it’s restoring balance to the whole system so the body can begin to heal itself.
Why the Emotional Side of Sciatica Matters
It’s common for sciatica to flare up during periods of high stress or emotional overwhelm. Grief, anxiety, burnout or long term tension can be stored in the body and contribute to dysfunction especially in areas like the lower back and hips.
Ed takes the time to understand not just your physical symptoms, but your lived experience. This whole-person approach is what makes his treatments different and effective in cases where others haven’t helped.
