At Somerset Osteopathic Clinic, we specialise in helping patients with unresolved and complex pain — and for many, cranial osteopathy offers a calm, gentle yet deeply effective form of treatment that unlocks true healing.

Whether you’re a sleep deprived new parent, a colicky newborn, or someone who’s experienced emotional or physical trauma, cranial osteopathy could be the supportive, subtle therapy you’ve been searching for.

What Is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy is a refined and gentle type of osteopathic treatment that focuses on releasing subtle restrictions in the body — more specifically in the head, spine and sacrum. It is based on the understanding that the body has a natural rhythm and a capacity for self-healing when restrictions or tension are released.

Despite the name, cranial osteopathy isn’t limited to the head. The term “cranial” simply reflects the technique’s origin and its focus on the body’s craniosacral system. It’s used throughout the entire body to help restore balance, reduce tension and encourage optimal function and healing.

Why Might Cranial Osteopathy Be Useful?

One of the most valuable aspects of cranial osteopathy is its ability to address areas of tension and imbalance that often go unnoticed in other treatments — particularly those deep within the nervous system, connective tissues (fascia), and the craniosacral system that influence the entire body. Rather than focusing only on muscular or skeletal systems, cranial work accesses the deeper rhythms and tensions stored within the body.

It can often be particularly beneficial for:

  • Babies and children (e.g. unsettled behaviour, colic, digestive discomfort)

  • Pregnancy and postnatal support (e.g. back pain, pelvic discomfort, stress)

  • Stress and anxiety (by calming the nervous system)

  • Tension headaches or migraines

  • Jaw pain (TMJ), neck and shoulder tension

  • People with unresolved or complex pain

  • Trauma (both physical and emotional)

We often see patients who have tried many other treatments without success. They are seeking not just temporary pain relief, but answers and long-term results. Cranial osteopathy can be the missing piece of the puzzle.

How Does Cranial Osteopathy Work?

The treatment uses light touch techniques to detect areas of strain or tension in the body. These areas might be holding onto past injury, stress or unresolved trauma. By listening to the subtle rhythms of the body (known as the cranial rhythm), your osteopath can identify where things aren’t functioning optimally and apply gentle pressure to restore flow and ease.

Cranial osteopathy works with the nervous system, the fascia (the connective tissue network), and the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain and spine. This type of treatment doesn’t force change, rather it supports the body in making its own adjustments.

Cranial Osteopathy for Babies

Cranial osteopathy is a particularly gentle and effective form of treatment for babies. It uses light touch to assess and release tension in the baby’s body — particularly in the head, neck, and spine — that may have been caused during birth or pregnancy.

Even the smoothest deliveries can involve pressure and compression on a baby’s delicate system. In more difficult or assisted births, this can be even more pronounced. Cranial osteopathy works by gently releasing these areas of tension, supporting the baby’s ability to settle, feed, sleep, and grow more comfortably.

At Somerset Osteopathic Clinic, we take a whole-body approach to your baby’s wellbeing. During a session, Ed will use skilled, light-pressure techniques to assess your baby’s cranial bones, spine, and soft tissues. Treatment is subtle, with most babies remaining calm or even falling asleep during their appointment.

What to Expect from Cranial Osteopathy for Babies

Cranial osteopathy is extremely gentle, and babies usually remain calm or even fall asleep during treatment. After a session, many parents notice their baby sleeps more deeply, feeds more easily, or seems calmer and more settled. Occasionally, a baby may be a little restless or have increased bowel activity for a short time — a natural part of the body’s way of processing treatment and releasing tension.

Your baby’s comfort and wellbeing are always our top priority. Ed will explain what he observes throughout the session and ensure you feel informed and reassured. Parents are encouraged to stay close — your presence is an important part of helping your baby feel safe and relaxed.

With years of experience treating infants, Ed works in a way that is both effective and nurturing. We’re proud to welcome many babies into clinic — often after supporting their mothers during pregnancy — and it’s a real privilege to be part of their early health journey.

What Can You Expect From Your First Appointment?

Your first session will begin with a comprehensive consultation. Ed will take a detailed history of your symptoms, lifestyle, past injuries and your emotional wellbeing. Many patients say this is the most thorough health conversation they’ve ever had.

The treatment itself takes place fully clothed while you lie comfortably on the treatment bed. Ed will use gentle hand placements on the head, base of the spine, or other areas of the body, depending on what’s needed.

Patients often describe feeling:

  • Deeply relaxed

  • Warm or tingly sensations

  • Emotional release

  • Subtle shifts within the body

Sometimes, you may not feel much at all during the session — and that’s okay. Cranial work is incredibly gentle, yet powerful and changes can occur over hours or even days as the body integrates the work.

It may feel like very little is happening, but it’s in those still, supported moments that real change begins.

Is Cranial Osteopathy Safe?

Yes — cranial osteopathy is incredibly safe and non-invasive. It’s gentle approach makes it particularly suitable for all ages, from newborns just a few days old through to the elderly. Many of our patients first came to us during pregnancy, and we now see their babies in clinic — a truly rewarding experience.
